Joel Project Weekend

I've invited the club to come to my house on April 12, the day of the meeting, to start work on The Joel Project.  Mostly, we will be assessing the task we have at hand, parts needed, and the quality of the donor car. 

Anyone wishing to set up tent in my yard is welcome to do so.  We can do a little grilling along the way.

I don't know if Don has any parts left that may be needed for the project, but if he does, I can likely get them to your place.

I think we just need to assess the car and see what's needed, then who has what.  I don't want to have a lot of unnecessary stuff brought out.  We might do a little work on it, like trying to get it running on its own and see if it will go and stop on its own.  We'll definitely need a loaner battery to get it going on its own.

Can I come down there and help out? I still have a sunroof glass and a few body panels at the shop and at home.

You're certainly welcome to come help.  Right now, I think the only body panel we need is the front aero fascia.  It has suffered some damage over the years.  All the other body panels look to be pretty good.

From 11 AM until 1 PM we will assess the available vehicle.  At or around 1PM we will go to the Fatz Cafe, 442 Atlanta Hwy NW, Winder, GA 30680 in the Wal-Mart shopping center for lunch.  After lunch we will return to possibly work on the car.

Bring folding seats sipping stuff if you want anything other than water.  I will have a cooler of bottled water.  Bring your own tools to accomplish minor work and diagnostics.  I have a floor jack and jack stands, ramps, jumper cables, timing light and distributor wrench. 

Once you're on Hwy 316, keep in the right lane once you get into the construction zone else you will be forced to make a left turn toward Buford.  After the construction zone, you can move to the left lane for your next turn onto Winder Highway, Hwy 8.

If you'd like to bring it, I think we can find a place to hang it for the day's event. 

I have just spoken with the person who is donating the 2 88's to us.  Many of you will remember long time Georgia Fiero Club member Mike Barr.  Some will also remember Dave Bellville and his 88 Fiero,  Mike has donated Dave's car and his own 88GT to the club.  They are basically ready to go on the road with just a few minor tweeks.  He is doing this with the condition that they go to Wounded Warriors Project recipients, or proceeds from the sale goes to WWP. 

We should have pictures of both cars within a week.  It will take 2 vehicles with tow dollies or trailer and a spare set of tires for each Fiero to go to Maryville, TN to bring them back.

Just throwing out ideas here...I have not confirmed any of this with Sharon yet, she has veto power here.

Our normal drive to Charlies would take 4:26 (293 miles)...if we were to drive by and pick one up on the way, it would be 7:28 (389 miles).  It really would be the most efficient way to get one of them back.  Would we still need tires if I use the trailer?  I forget the details....what kind of sleeping space is there Friday night?

Problems with this..it would mean only two of us can come (but Colin wasn't a sure thing anyway).  The real issue is that it would use more gas.  I calculate about $125 difference between this and taking the convertible straight there and back...and Sharon and I are both real tight on money right now.

The tires may be inflated or may be able to be inflated enough to get one of them on a trailer.  I don't know, yet, but he felt they might be dry rotted enough that they couldn't be pulled all the way down here on a dolly.  I think one of them has (had) new tires when parked. 

At this time, don't bother to go by and pick one up.  Just come straight down.  It's only about 4 hours from here and I have no problem with towing one back on a dolly. 

I don't have a spare bedroom, so  I can't offer anything other than a sofa with 2 built in recliners, a separate recliner, a living room floor, or a place to pitch a tent.  There's a Jamestown Inn and what was a Holiday Inn Express about 5 miles away, or the better motel that you stayed at when we did the poker run, about 7 miles away.  There are others about 12 miles away at the Mall of Georgia.  Oh, yeah, I have a front yard camping area for roughing it in a tent.  Front door will be unlocked for night excursions to the fridge or bathroom or you can use the trench latrine in the bushes in the back yard. 

If Colin isn't coming, get my Haynes manual from him.  I gave him the correct one that goes with his car.

I have a truck, if someone has a tow dolly or trailer.

I have a tow dolly you can use.

Just promise you won't scratch it.
And talk nice to it.
And tell it it's a pretty dolly.

It's been used by the club before.
I'll have it greased and tires full. I've got one of those fancy 'bottom air' compressors.

When it's all settled upon, maybe two of us can go up with our trucks and bring them back down.  I should have pictures of the cars within the week.
